i never knew i would have to go through almost two years' of humiliation, mobbing, extreme depression and a lost of self-esteem once i casually mentioned that i'd be bringing my 'partner' to the company's year-end function. never shall the twain meet, right? so right in so many ways.

i am a 16-year old gay teenager, living in a small town not to far from a big city in the usa. i play sports and am actually very good at what i do. the only problem is, how will me teammates react when i tell them i am gay? not even my parents, friends, buddies or anyone else for that matter knows about my secret.

as an artist in my (little) spare time i have, i have this great passion for photography and digital art. no secret about that! i could lose myself in a world of beautiful scenes, interesting people, objects that simply fascinate me and in the end come up with artwork that in some cases have won some awards.

who am i?

probably a question almost everyone struggles to get their head around at some point in their lives. finding and formulating an answer to give definition to the whole concept of being someone i am comfortable with not only takes time and lots of thought,

some might debate about what exactly is "culture" and what it's not. what do we like to see? what do we enjoy watching? what do we need to enrich our lives? if one should ask this question to a hundred people, one would most probably receive just as many answers.

we have all seen and read articles and studies about the benefits of diversity and inclusion in companies. we know that in the usa and europe, large organisations have whole teams (or at least a person) taking take to ensure that the workforce consists of a mix of ethnic groups, where sexual preferences are not taken into account when applicants apply for positions and in some cases where the business leaders appointed, are women.

normally corporate company guidelines apply to all geographical areas of business. for instance, a policy (of guideline) stipulating how suppliers should be entered into an erp-system, covers all aspects of obtaining the master data, the process of approval to actually allow the supplier to be registered and then also the system steps to capture the supplier's data in the erp-system. with a global diversity & inclusion policy this mindset could lead to many problems.

organisations of various sizes can benefit from having a transparent diversity and inclusion policy in place. this article highlights the 6 most important reasons (as we see them) for implementing such a policy.

small- to medium-sized businesses (sme) sometimes simply do not have the infrastructure or need for defining and implementing an official diversity & inclusion policy. depending on the actual size of the workforce, ranging from 1 to perhaps 500, there may be no one in the business giving thought to such a policy.
